Why Does My Sump Pump Smell? Odor Safety Guide

A sump odor is a clue, not a diagnosis. First separate a localized stale-water smell from sewage, rotten-egg, fuel/solvent or burning-electrical odors. The last three can require immediate evacuation or professional assessment.

Odor triage

Odor/observationPossible sourceLow-risk observationWho to call
Musty or earthy near damp materialsMoisture and microbial growth in materials; stagnant basin waterLook for wet drywall, carpet, stored cardboard and condensation.Water-remediation or mold professional when area is extensive or hidden.
Sewage odorSewage/ejector issue, dry trap, drain/vent problem; a groundwater sump should not be assumed to contain sewageDetermine whether the basin is a sewage ejector or groundwater sump; keep the cover closed.Plumber; urgent if sewage is present.
Rotten-egg odorSewer gas, natural gas odorant, sulfur compounds or stagnant water are possibilitiesDo not attempt to identify by prolonged smelling. Note location and leave for strong/uncertain odor.Gas utility/emergency service for possible gas; plumber otherwise.
Chemical, gasoline or solvent odorContaminated water or spillAvoid contact and ignition sources.Local fire/environmental authority or qualified remediation professional.
Burning plastic/electricalOverheated pump, cord, outlet or controlDo not touch equipment or operate switches near water.Electrician and pump service urgently.

Cleaning is not the first answer to every odor

If the source is unknown, adding cleaners can create harmful reactions, damage equipment or hide a sewer or electrical problem. Identify the basin type and source first. Follow the pump and basin manufacturer’s maintenance instructions for any cleaning that follows.

After a water event

EPA guidance emphasizes moisture control and prompt drying. Wet porous materials can support mold growth; address both the odor and the water source rather than masking the smell.
