Sump Pump Running but Not Pumping Water
If the motor runs but the water level does not fall, the failure is in the water path or the pump is no longer producing useful flow. A blocked or frozen discharge, a valve problem, an obstructed intake or an internal pump fault can look similar without inspection.
What the behavior means
| Observation | Possible explanation | Safe observation | Next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motor sound; no outdoor discharge | Blocked/frozen line, closed valve, failed pump or disconnected pipe | Look at the known discharge outlet from a safe exterior location. | If the pit rises, call urgently. Have the full discharge route checked. |
| Motor hums but does not sound as usual | Jammed or failed pump; low voltage/control issue also possible | Record the sound and stop repeated cycling if the manual/controller permits from a dry location. | Professional service; do not open the pump. |
| Some water leaves, but level barely falls | Inflow exceeds flow, restriction, excessive head, wear or undersizing | Time the level change and compare with visible inflow. | A technician needs pump model, lift and discharge layout. |
| Water falls back immediately after stop | Missing, reversed, stuck or leaking check valve; discharge issue | Observe the water surge and shutdown sound. | See check-valve symptoms. |
| Problem began during freezing weather | Frozen exterior discharge is plausible | Inspect only accessible outdoor pipe from stable, dry ground. | Do not use flame or unsafe heating; call service if blocked. |
Information that speeds up service
Provide the pump brand/model, approximate age, water level trend, whether the motor runs, whether water exits outdoors, recent weather, alarm indications and any repeated breaker/GFCI trips. Those observations are more useful than declaring the pump “dead.”
